Meet The Piano
The piano was invented around 1700 by Bartolomeo Cristofori, a harpsichord maker in Florence. He called it the “gravicembalo col piano e forte”: a keyboard that could play both soft (piano) and loud (forte) depending on how you touch the keys. The name was later shortened to piano, and music was never the same again.
Inside, every key is a small lever. When you press it, a felt-covered hammer strikes tightly stretched steel strings while a damper lifts so the note can ring. Melody, harmony and rhythm all sit under your ten fingers, which is why the piano is the favourite instrument of composers and one of the best ways to understand how music works.
Family: keyboard, with strings struck by hammers
Origin: Florence, Italy, around 1700
Range: 88 keys, just over 7 octaves
Heard in: classical, jazz, pop, film and Arabic music

Types Of Piano
You can learn on any of them. Your teacher will help you choose the right instrument for your space and budget.
Grand Piano
Its strings lie horizontally, giving a rich, powerful tone and the most responsive touch. The instrument of concert halls and recording studios.
Upright Piano
The strings run vertically inside a tall cabinet, so it fits in a home or classroom while keeping the real feel of hammers on strings.
Digital Piano
Weighted keys and sampled sound, with headphones and a built-in metronome. A great choice for beginners and for quiet practice at any hour.
