Meet The Piano

The piano was invented around 1700 by Bartolomeo Cristofori, a harpsichord maker in Florence. He called it the “gravicembalo col piano e forte”: a keyboard that could play both soft (piano) and loud (forte) depending on how you touch the keys. The name was later shortened to piano, and music was never the same again.
Inside, every key is a small lever. When you press it, a felt-covered hammer strikes tightly stretched steel strings while a damper lifts so the note can ring. Melody, harmony and rhythm all sit under your ten fingers, which is why the piano is the favourite instrument of composers and one of the best ways to understand how music works.
